WWE Wrestlemania 29: The WWE Needs John Cena to Win on Sunday

WWE Wrestlemania 29: The WWE Needs John Cena to Win on Sunday

Cover_crop_exact

The biggest difference between the WWE Champion The Rock and John Cena, besides the victory at WrestleMania 28, is simple: The Rock knows he can beat the greatest marketing tool in WWE history. Cena, like the Little Engine That Could, thinks he can beat one of the most popular wrestlers in the history of the business.
No matter how easy that may be to comprehend, it is more significant than just a "People's Elbow" or an "AA" as a finishing move. The entire dichotomy of the match and the outcome is predicated on the fact the WWE needs Cena to win this match, not whether he should pin "The Brahma Bull" for the victory.
This match is a matter of righting a problem the WWE is now facing with a part-time champion who may be scheduled to work through Extreme Rules next month.  The company is getting nowhere with a belt that is not featured every week on Raw. Booking The Rock to win the WWE Title may have been a stroke of brilliance with the Royal Rumble and the release of Dwayne Johnson's movie, GI Joe: Retalliation, but it is awful for the wrestling scene.
The WWE title has never meant so little in the eyes of the company, where it seems Vince McMahon is more concerned with the "Entertainment" part of World Wrestling and forgetting what got him on the map. That is where the differences between the two opponents for the title match began and continue.
The Rock is a universal character, traced in movies, commercials, television, etc... Cena has had his day in those mediums as well, but his roots remain firm to the company that made him a star (and currently one of the more hated people in the business if the crowds in Washington Monday night are any indication.) He spoke of it last year when the two met at WM 28, and while he has not been as aggressive in his attack in that realm, the same still holds true.
Yes, The Rock won the title and has been on television more this time around, but it is still not sufficient enough to warrant a long title run. For whatever we hate about Cena, his body of work this year warrants the title, plain and simple. The Rock is more there as a publicity stunt, a way to create drama for himself and hopefully a quick fix to the problems that exist within the WWE.
The Rock gets people in the seats. He is an exciting train wreck waiting to happen with his opponents, and he gets his message to the millions (and I mean millions) of WWE fans worldwide.
But he cannot fix writing, planning, booking, angles, injuries and continued appearances on Raw every week.
Cena cannot do any of that either, except show up every Monday night and hear the chants we all love to hear. "Let's go Cena. Cena Sucks!"
If you want to take this a step further, it is the slippery slope Ric Flair used to run from time to time in the NWA and WCW.
Flair was the company's greatest villain, but even with his "mean side," he was still loved and hated at the same time. It's difficult to hate someone you want to drink a scotch with and ride Space Mountain with (ladies) all the time. Fans still hated what he said and could willfully root for and against him.
Cena is a hero to the kids of the WWE Universe, wins, says the right things and is the Hulk Hogan of the WWE right now. But on the flip side, he is disliked for his "vanilla" exterior by adults and his often "Wally Cleaver-like" comments. Members of the military love him and the fans of an "edgier" generation want someone like CM Punk to guide them.
It's a no-win situation. And Cena and The Rock are caught in the middle of it. But for now, the WWE needs the "softer" of two sides to prevail. It's the only way to make the title that made both of these men superstars important again.

Mick Foley, Booker T and Bob Backlund to Be Left off Hall of Fame TV Special

Mick Foley, Booker T and Bob Backlund to Be Left off Hall of Fame TV Special

12_raw_03021999_0018_crop_exact Source: WWE.com
This year's Hall of Fame class may be one of the greatest of all time, but that means some huge names will be left off of the television special.
WrestlingInc.com is reporting that only three inductions will be televised when the one-hour special airs:

"This year's one-hour WWE Hall of Fame special will air next Tuesday, April 9 at 10:00 p.m. ET on the USA Network. Dave Meltzer noted on last night's episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that only the inductions of Bruno Sammartino, Trish Stratus and Donald Trump would be televised."

That means that Booker T, Bob Backlund and, most shockingly, Mick Foley will be left off the television special.

One of WWE’s choices for televised induction is questionable.

Bruno Sammartino is an obvious choice for a TV slot, especially being inducted by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

With WWE trying pathetically hard to appeal to mainstream audiences and sell themselves as still being hip, cool and relevant, it also makes sense that they'd air the celebrity induction of Donald Trump.

However, the logic of a Trish Stratus televised induction is flawed.

Trish is a seven-time Women's Champion and was named "Diva of the Decade" by WWE, but no one could possibly argue that she had a greater influence on the business than Mick Foley (or Booker T or Bob Backlund, for that matter).

Mick is a former three-time WWE Champion and, more importantly, was one of the reasons for WWE's massive surge in popularity in the mid- to late '90s

Stratus' impact on the business is certainly worth recognition, but it does not come close to matching Foley's.

Fans of Booker T and Bob Backlund could rightfully argue the same thing; one is a six-time World Champion and the other has the third-longest streak of cumulative days as WWE Champion, behind only Sammartino and Hogan.

To be fair to WWE, it does also make sense that they wouldn’t televise both Backlund and Sammartino’s inductions, given that they both occupy similar “old school” positions in their class.

WWE obviously and rightfully want the third induction to be someone from the modern era of wrestling, one that all fans will recognize.

Again, Stratus' achievements shouldn’t be slighted, but they simply aren't as great as those of Foley or Booker.

It's possible that WWE was looking for variety when choosing which inductions to televise, but it's still staggering for Foley to be forgotten.

It's known, too, that Stephanie McMahon will be the one to induct Stratus. With the recent news that Vince McMahon himself will induct Donald Trump, perhaps WWE is looking to emphasize the family-run nature of their business?

The ceremony takes place the night before WrestleMania and will be televised two days after; hopefully officials change their mind on this between now and then.

Vince McMahon Reveals He Will Induct Donald Trump into WWE Hall of Fame

Vince McMahon revealed on Twitter that he has the honor of inducting Donald Trump into WWE's Hall of Fame.
McMahon sent out a tweet on Tuesday evening that read:
McMahon is the obvious candidate to induct Trump. They have a long business relationship that has benefited both men in the past and have had multiple onscreen interactions.
WrestleManias IV and V were held at Trump Plaza. This is the only time that WrestleMania has been in the same location on consecutive occasions. Trump would say in The True Story Of WrestleMania DVD released in 2011 that WrestleMania was "a very big event." In fact, Trump compared it to holding a Mike Tyson boxing match.
Trump would also make an appearance at WrestleMania XX, where he was interviewed by Jesse Ventura.
Of course, Trump will be best remembered by wrestling fans for his two sorties onto WWE television in competition with future inductor Vince McMahon.
The first came just before WrestleMania 23, when he and Rosie O'Donnell were represented as having a match on WWE television. Local wrestlers actually took the place of the celebrities involved.
Trump would interrupt Vince McMahon's "Fan Appreciation Night" a few weeks later. He then proceeded to drop money from the sky and steal the spotlight from McMahon. Eventually the two would agree to a match, where they were represented by a WWE Superstar. The wrestler who lost would cause the billionaire to lose his hair

Sold as the "Battle of the Billionaires," Trump's representative, Bobby Lashley, defeated McMahon's wrestler, Umagawith the help of referee "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Vince was shaved live on the broadcast to the delight of the fans.
Trump reappeared on the WWE in 2009. Trump "bought the WWE" from Vince and announced an advert-free show. He also refunded all of the tickets sold that night. Vince "bought" the company back the next week.
Donald Trump's long-running relationship with the WWE certainly makes him one of the more justified celebrity Hall of Fame inductees. Vince McMahon is the right person to induct Trump, as he is the one constant in The Apprentice star's WWE career.

WWE to Stream Both Pre-Show and Post-Show for WrestleMania

WWE to Stream Both Pre-Show and Post-Show for WrestleMania

20130402_light_wm29_preshowpostshow_homepage_crop_exact WWE's advertisement for this forthcoming event (Image Obtained From WWE.com)
WWE.com has announced that the company will be streaming bonus content before and after WrestleMania.
Before Sunday’s pay-per-view there will be a 60-minute interactive pre-show, which will include the Intercontinental championship match between Wade Barrett and The Miz. The WWE’s press release states:
Expanded to 60 minutes of access and action inside MetLife Stadium, the live Pre-Show promises to pack a punch with backstage interviews, footage from around MetLife Stadium, and expert analysis from a unique panel of WWE Superstars and Legends. Plus, the WWE Universe will have the unprecedented opportunity to participate in the Pre-Show with polls and in-show featured tweets and Touts with your comments. Not to mention an Intercontinental Title Match between champion Wade Barrett and The Miz!
WrestleMania will be followed by the WWE’s first ever post-show. WWE.com says this about the post-show:
Immediately after WrestleMania 29, hit WWE’s online channels to experience the fallout from The Show of Shows with exclusive interviews, celebrations and more in a live Post-Show, brought to you from inside MetLife Stadium. Tune in to see your WrestleMania reactions from Twitter and Tout broadcast live.
This is a great move by the WWE, as it really highlights how special WrestleMania is.
The pre-show was expected, as there has been one for every event since last year's WrestleMania. However, expanding it to a full 60-minutes is a clever move, as it suggests that a normal show would be too short.
This furthers the idea that WrestleMania is bigger than any other event.
Adding a post-show is an even brighter idea.
Raw_1036_photo_064_crop_exact The Miz will definitely be part of the pre-show (Image Obtained From WWE.com)
Every major sport has an after-show where experts analyze the best and worst parts of the action. This has the dual role of explaining the finer points to diehard supporters and bringing the people behind the action closer to the fans.
WWE can use the post-show to enlighten its audience and, more importantly, further storylines at the same time.
Athletes from all sports have a reputation for saying more than they should in the heat of the moment. This is most common straight after the game, when their adrenaline is still pumping.
There could not be a better time for a superstar to let slip vital information about why he or she dislikes another character.
Such instances have happened before on WWE’s Youtube show “Backstage Fallout”. Story advancements get slipped into interviews at unexpected moments. However, it has only really happened for minor feuds so far.
If the post-show proves to be a hit, there will surely be questions about the future of “Backstage Fallout."
It is a good thing whenever the WWE adds something to WrestleMania which makes it feel more important. Just creating something new and unseen has this impact.
The pre-show will get lots of viewers, because fans will tune in to see Barrett and Miz. The post-show’s success is far more difficult to predict. Some fans will want to have the action examined, but many will have had enough wrestling after the mammoth four-hour show.
As for where these shows can be found, WWE.com has this covered:
Visit WWE.com, the WWE App, Facebook.com/WWE, YouTube.com/WWE this Sunday at 6 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT and immediately following WrestleMania 29 for an unparalleled interactive experience, all part of the festivities for WWE’s Biggest Spectacle.
If this post-show is a success, there is the potential to run one after every televised program. This could get the fans closer to the athletes they adore. Yet, there is no guarantees about this new project, so only time will tell if this becomes a WWE institution or a one-off failure.

Report: Times Alloted to Each WrestleMania Match Leaked

Report: Times Alloted to Each WrestleMania Match Leaked

Wm28_photo_333_crop_exact
Source: WWE.com
F4Wonline has reported the planned times allotted for all matches booked for WrestleMania 29.

The problem with a supercard such as the ones we see at WrestleMania each year is that it's difficult to find the time to allow each talent to give a substantial performance.

From what F4Wonline is reporting  no matches will be plagued with the 'seven-minute treatment' (see Punk vs. Mysterio at WrestleMania 26, among others).

The times for each match (not including time for entrances) are listed below in ascending order:
  1. Chris Jericho vs. Fandango – 10 minutes
  2. Ryback vs. Mark Henry – 12 minutes
  3. Kane and Daniel Bryan vs. Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston – 12 to 15 minutes
  4. The Shield vs. Randy Orton, Sheamus and Big Show – 15 minutes
  5. Jack Swagger vs. Alberto Del Rio – 15 minutes
  6. CM Punk vs. The Undertaker – 20 minutes
  7. Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar – 20 to 30 minutes
  8. The Rock vs. John Cena – 25 to 30 minutes
Since plans change so rapidly, don’t be shocked to see the event pan out differently.

However, if the report is accurate, fans both have blessings and concerns.

It's good to see the tag team title match last more than a few minutes, as the 12 minute mark should be enough time for the stars involved to tell a full story.
Jericho vs. Fandango only going 10 minutes is a little strange, though. Perhaps WWE isn't confident in Fandango's ability to perform for a longer amount of time given he's debuting on such a grand scale.

However, with Jericho being one of the company's best performers, 10 minutes feels like under-utilization of his talents.

It's also no surprise that Rock vs. Cena II is given the greatest amount of time, but Rock has struggled to keep up in the past. His match with Punk at Elimination Chamber was 21 minutes and was resthold heavy.

CM Punk vs. Undertaker getting the smallest amount of time out of the big three matches is also a little disappointing.

It does make sense though, as The Phenom is getting old, and these two expert performers could certainly steal the show in 20 minutes.

You'll also notice that the eight man tag involving Team Rhodes Scholars, Brodus Clay and Tensai isn't on the list, which probably means it'll be short.

What do you think? Should some matches get more or less time? Or is everything as it should be. Let us know in the comments section below.

Welcome to the third installment of leaked WrestleMania 29 set-up photos.
In case you missed the previous articles, you can click (here) and get yourself caught up.
On Wednesday afternoon.
I've got to say it's impressive.
Screenshot1961_original
Overall, the company has done a solid job at utilizing its space and will certainly give us a spectacle. That being said, the WWE has surpassed last year’s look and really is trying to give MetLife Stadium a New York feel.
The company still has roughly four days to finalize its set-up. Chances are, we have just scratched the surface and can anticipate more things to come.
If the weather is a factor, this could be the last time that MetLife Stadium hosts this event. In fact, the WWE could very well decide to go the NFL route and hold 'Mania in warm weather or enclosed stadiums only.
With that in mind, it’s very likely that the WWE is giving this event its all. They too may realize that it could be the last time they hold this event here.
Ultimately, we have no clue what the future holds for this year’s pay-per-view, let alone future WrestleManias.
That being said, East Coast fans like myself will be watching this year’s event with bated breath, in hopes that this will not be the event's tri-state area curtain call.
