According to the official World Wrestling Entertainment website, Divas Champion Kaitlyn will defend her title against second-generation performer Tamina at Sunday's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.
The appearance of a Divas Championship match on the broadcast is interesting because neither woman involved has appeared on Monday Night Raw since January 28, when they were involved in the "Las Vegas Showgirls Lumberjill" debacle during "Raw Roulette." Neither has appeared on Friday Night Smackdown in that span, either.
With so many of the male performers tied up in six-man tag matches, Elimination Chamber matches, and marquee title bouts, a Divas Championship match being thrown onto the card with little or no hype or attention should not be a surprise. With three hours of pay-per-view airtime to fill and only four matches previously announced, there was a great chance Kaitlyn would be defending her title in some fashion.
This Sunday's title bout likely will mean little in the grand scheme of things. The fact that there has been absolutely no follow-up on their match from January, as well as the fact that a match between the two talented women was axed from the Royal Rumble pay-per-view because of time constraints, indicates there is no real long-term plans for Kaitlyn and Tamina to feud with one another.
The bigger question is whether or not Kaitlyn's title
defense on Sunday night is a sign that the company plans to use her in
some sort of program heading into WrestleMania 29. For
just under a year, fans have witnessed teases and hints of a Kaitlyn-AJ
Lee feud that many had hoped would culminate at this year's 'Mania
event.
With just under two months to go until the biggest show the sport has to offer, however, there has been no recent interaction between the two and no reason to believe there will be anytime soon. AJ has appeared at the side of Dolph Ziggler since her heel turn in December at the TLC pay-per-view and Kaitlyn has wrapped up a feud with Eve Torres that resulted in her first championship gold earlier this year.
If given time Sunday night, Kaitlyn and Tamina have the opportunity to put on a very good championship bout. Unfortunately, with no direction or attention on any of WWE's main programming, it will be difficult to get the fans to react, or remember, the work put in by either woman. What they do, instead, will determine the course the Divas Championship takes on the road to WrestleMania.
