As dire as the tag-team division may seem right now in WWE, it
seems like the creative team is starting to make a concerted effort to
ensure that tag-team wrestling is relevant again. The incumbent
titleholders are Kofi Kingston and R-Truth, but they need a good feud to truly put the tag straps on the map again. There are actually several tag teams in the WWE currently, but I'm not sure any of them are capable of bringing the division back from the dead single-handedly. The Prime Time Players and Primo and Epico are each capable teams, but Darren Young and Titus O'Neil lack in the ring, while neither Primo nor Epico is particularly good on the mic.
With that said, I don't feel like any currently constructed team is a credible challenger to Kofi and Truth. That is why I'm proposing that Daniel Bryan and Kane form a partnership and ultimately win the Tag Team Championships from Kingston and R-Truth at Night of Champions.
When you consider the fact that Kane has had successful tag teams in the past with guys like Rob Van Dam, X-Pac and The Hurricane, a Kane/Bryan combo doesn't seem quite so strange. Both Kane and Bryan are very good as individual entities, but they may be even better as a team in terms of the in-ring contrast and the hilarity that is certain to ensue.
On SmackDown, there was a backstage brawl between some of the aforementioned tag teams, as well as The Usos and the team of Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd. Eve then gave general manager Booker T a list of tag teams as well as some statistical analysis, so conventional wisdom says that Booker is going to address the situation this week.
There are a number of different routes he could take, such as naming a No. 1 contender outright, having some sort of tournament or even having a multi-team match at Night of Champions, but I would tend to lean toward the latter above all else.
The WWE hasn't held a tag-team turmoil match in a couple of years, and Night of Champions would be the perfect venue for it. The match would feature all the teams that got involved in the backstage brawl, but the final team to enter would be Kane and Bryan, who would absolutely decimate the competition and win the Tag Team Championships.
Who should be the next challengers to Kofi Kingston and R-Truth?
Rumors persist that Triple H wants to place more of an emphasis on the tag-team division, and if Kane and Bryan team up to win the titles, then I'll believe that to be true. Tag-team wrestling used to be one of my favorite parts of WWE, so it saddens me to see it in its current state.
The company has the tools to turn things around, though, and all it is going to take is a little creativity and commitment. I realize that neither has been the WWE's cup of tea when it comes to the tag-team division, but the overall card would be so much better with a strong tag-team scene, so hopefully a Kane and Bryan team is indeed being planned.
