With the WWE clumsily avoiding its most recent booking iceberg at WWE Hell in a Cell, where Ryback's undefeated streak came to an end against WWE Champion CM Punk via screw job, the Titanic of sports entertainment is not quite out of the ocean.
While the upcoming triple threat match between Ryback, John Cena and CM Punk is a shrewd tactic to protect Ryback—who isn't expected to take the deciding pinfall nor win the WWE Championship—while keeping the future star relevant as a main eventer, January will bring yet another trying obstacle that figures to once again jam the WWE with a lose-lose situation.
Once again, this problem revolves around The Rock, whose announced involvement in a WWE Championship match at the Royal Rumble clearly came without a contingency plan, let alone a fluent creative path.
Should CM Punk's '80s-like title reign finally come to an end at the Royal Rumble in a dream match against The Rock as many expect it to, not only will the WWE be without a WWE Champion as a drawing card at live events through WrestleMania season—where fan interest is at its peak—but it will also be at the mercy of The Rock's tricky schedule that includes promoting G.I. Joe: Retaliation while likely shooting Hercules. (h/t the Guardian).
All roads seem to lead to a rematch between The Rock and John Cena for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29, but with so many invisible threads yet to be weaved into the WWE title picture, Twice in a Lifetime won't be as easy as it sounds.
As was reported by F4WOnline (h/t WrestleNewz), The Rock is no lock to work the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view—penultimate to WrestleMania—due to his aforementioned schedule.
Even if he was available for WWE's February franchise, a crowded Elimination Chamber match is beneath The Rock and could figure to hurt his WrestleMania drawing power through overexposure.
Of course, the WWE could always push the panic button by booking a "schmoz" disqualification finish during The Rock's WWE title match at the Royal Rumble.
But if that happens, the contingencies only multiply. Where would The Rock go from there? What about John Cena? Throughout his year-long title reign, CM Punk will have worked everybody not named The Undertaker (who appears to be noncommittal about Mania) come WrestleMania, so will we get another rerun come April should Punk retain until then?
